Islamic prayer times, every method side by side

The same town, the same day, seven answers. Each calculation method sets dawn and nightfall at its own angle of the sun, so Fajr and Isha can be many minutes apart. See every method side by side for any town, then follow the one your masjid keeps.

Why Islamic prayer times differ by method

The times are seen in the sky; a method turns them into numbers. The Quran ties the start of the fast to dawn, when the white thread becomes distinct from the black (Quran 2:187), and when Jibril led the Prophet ﷺ in prayer he prayed Fajr at true dawn and Isha once the twilight had gone (Sunan Abi Dawud 393).

A timetable needs a number for each: how far below the horizon the sun is at dawn and at nightfall. The bodies that publish methods chose different angles, so Fajr and Isha differ while Zuhr and Maghrib barely move.

Where the methods agree

Zuhr, Asr and Maghrib hardly move. Zuhr follows the sun past its highest point and Maghrib its setting, which every method takes alike, give or take a minute of caution.

Asr turns on the length of a shadow, so it changes only with the school: the standard time at one shadow-length, the Hanafi at two. Fajr and Isha are where the methods part, most of all in summer far from the equator.

Which method to follow

Follow your masjid. Prayer is set for the believers at fixed times (Quran 4:103), and a community keeps one timetable together. If you pray alone, start with the method this site uses for your country, the same as muslimsaroundtheworld.org.

Whichever method you follow, the prayer is the same: learn it step by step on Muslims Around the World.

Questions about Islamic prayer times

Why are there different Islamic prayer times for the same town?

Each calculation method sets dawn and nightfall at its own angle of the sun below the horizon. The difference shows in Fajr and Isha, and grows in summer the further a place is from the equator.

Is Asr different between the methods?

Hardly. Asr turns on the length of a shadow, not on an angle below the horizon, so the methods agree on it to a minute or so; the school is what moves it, the Hanafi time coming later.

Which method does each page start with?

The one muslimsaroundtheworld.org uses for the country: the Moonsighting Committee in the UK, Karachi in Pakistan, ISNA in North America, Umm al-Qura in Saudi Arabia, and so on. Every other method is shown beside it.

Why do some methods give no Isha on short summer nights?

Where twilight lasts all night the sun never sinks to the method’s angle, so a rule for short nights takes over, such as a seventh of the night. Each place page says which rule it uses.
